History & Culture

Founded in 1730 as a Jesuit mission, San José del Cabo has retained its colonial charm over the centuries. This picturesque town is known for its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, which evoke a journey back in time to the time when the first missionaries arrived in the region.

The historic center and Plaza Mijares are the cultural heart of the city, where the church of San José and other historic buildings are located.

Every Thursday evening, the Art Walk transforms downtown into a vibrant cultural scene, where local artists display their works in galleries and outdoor spaces, attracting tourists and residents alike.

Mexican traditions are alive in San José del Cabo. During local festivities, such as the Day of the Dead and the patronal feast of San José, the town fills with color and music, offering visitors an authentic cultural experience. In addition, the influence of the region's indigenous peoples, such as the Pericúes, is still felt in the crafts and legends that endure.

The unique mix of history, culture and art makes San José del Cabo a special destination, where every corner tells a story and every event celebrates Mexico's rich heritage.
